Inactivity
The importance of regular physical activity is often overlooked even though numerous research has shown the wide spread benefits of being active. “Most individuals of all ages are not physically active at a level for sufficient maintenance of health (7).” Not only are individuals not sufficiently physically active but those that are, are not enough hence, “Physical inactivity is a major public health problem (4).”
Inactivity Combined with Aging
As we age we all experience a decline in functional capacities. However, these declines are not solely due to age but to decrease and insufficient physical activity. Inactivity accelerates the natural degradation accompanied with aging.
One needs to acknowledge that the benefits of regular and appropriate physical activity “can be attained by people of all ages” (1).
Exercise Prescription
When prescribing physical activity keep in mind that, it should be tailored to the needs, requirements and objectives of the individual and “should incorporate a variety of exercises performed at a sufficient intensity to enhance the development and maintenance of muscular strength and endurance, and lean body mass (7).”
The “KEY” factor in obtaining or maintaining functional capacity, independence and a good quality of life is in having an adequately functioning musculoskeletal system.
Regulating Intensity
However, the greatest benefits are seen from individuals who “go from doing nothing to doing something” (8). This statement is aimed to prove that people continuously need to tax their capabilities in order to experience gains in their physical fitness. For individuals who wish to further improve their fitness and increase their overall health may benefit by exceeding the minimum recommended amount of physical activity.
